William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor who is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, and wrote about 38 plays and 154 sonnets, which continue to be performed and studied around the world.

Some of his most famous plays include Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear. Shakespeare's influence on literature and the English language is immense, and his works have been translated into every major living language. He is often referred to as the “Bard of Avon” and his birthday, April 23, is celebrated as World Book Day.
